Lest We Forget

"In Flanders fields the poppies blow,
Between the crosses, row on row..."

Tuesday 11th November marks the 90th Anniversary of the ending of the 1st World War. After the deaths of some 1 million, of the 5 million British and Commonwealth servicemen in uniform in November 1918, only 5 remain alive today. So why do we still gather to remember?

Remembrance day is not just about the 1st World War. British servicemen are still in combat all these years later. And dying still. Indeed, there has been just one year since the end of the second World War in which no British serviceman was killed in action (1968. Post Aden and pre-Northern Ireland). Therefore, there can be few of us alive today whose family has not been touched by war. And, as long as we remember, then, surely, it has not all been in vain?

There will be a ceremony at the War memorial in St. Céré, on Tuesday morning at 11h.30. If you cannot make it, spare a thought...

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning
We will remember them"

(2mins silence)

"When you go home, tell them of us and say -
For your tomorrow, we gave our today".

Thursday 20th November

Beaujolais Noveau "Est Arrivée" - Presque
It's on its way... nearly. So what's all the fuss?

Beaujolais nouveau is a red wine made from Gamay grapes produced in the Beaujolais region of France. It is the most popular vin de primeur, fermented for just a few weeks then officially released for sale on the third Thursday of November.

This "Beaujolais Day", or "Beaujolais Nouveau Day" sees heavy marketing from the producers, with races to get the first bottles of the vintage to different markets.

This year the harvest, that lasted nearly a month, beginning as it did on 15th September, was blessed with ideal weather. With no raind in September the crisp sunny weather meant that the grapes ripened evenly and steadily and that , health-wise, a good balance was reached. This allowed the vinegrowers to leave the bunches on the vine a few days longer and make the most of the excellent weather.

As far as volume is concerned, the yield in 2008 is particularly low, throughout the vinegrowing area. It could even be the lowest yield in Beaujolais since 1975, if the forecasts are confirmed: under 800 000 hl, where the average is 1 000 000 hl. This, in addition to the weather during the harvest, guarantees definite quality, and has led professionals to consider that “all the conditions for a successful vintage are combined”.

You can judge it for yourselves on Friday 21st November. Get this date in your diary and join us at the Café Voyageurs the day after the release of the 2008 vintage.
