Autumn Fête

Allsberg twinned with - St Cere

St. Céré Celebrates Arrival of Autumn
The sun came out and so did the people, to celebrate the end of harvest and the arrival of Autumn.

There was pretty much something for everyone... chestnuts roasting (if not over an open fire, then in a very useful looking rotating brazier-thing); that old favourite infernal machine squeezing apples; big-soup/hot food and, of course, crepes.

What? No Beer?
What was NOT there at the fête, to the dismay of many, was the buvette serving ice-cold beer. Now whose bright idea was it to scrap that?

Oh well, at least most of the bars were open and, of course, bargains to be had at the Vide Grenier. (See below)

Rugby World Cup England shirt

Rugby League World Cup
You would hardly know it it, but England and Scotland are battling it out against the world Down-Under, for the 2008 Rugby League World Cup. Not to be confused, of course, with the Rugby Union World Cup, scheduled to take place in New Zealand in 2011.

Not held in 2004 (because the two top teams - Australia and England where judged not to be up to it!), for this Rugby League International Competition, important changes have been made in the way in which the groups are decided, which guarantees that either England, Australia or New Zealand will be in the final. The other finalist will come from the Group that includes France and Scotland. How about that! It is, of course, all about money and in Sport, that means, TV rights.

Why so little publicity? First-off, it is Rugby League and not Rugby Union (don't ask. Ed.). Secondly, there is the problem with the time difference - most matches take place at breakfast time our-time. Also, unless you have Sky Sports, for much of the competition you will not be able to watch it live.

However, he BBC will air edited highlights on BBC2, but you cannot view videocasts over the internet as Auntie says you are not allowed if you live in France. You CAN, however, listen to digital radio over your broadband connection and Radio 5 Live will be broadcasting live commentaries of some of the matches. You can listen to BBC Radio 5 Live whilst you are on this website, by clicking the 5Live Logo below.

Anyway, for those who have a dish aimed at Astra 2, it is possible to watch some BBC coverage Free to Air. Check your daily listings.

At the time of publishing,Tonga beat Ireland (22-20), England have won against Papua New Guinea (32-26) and Scotland were beaten by France (36-18), but they managed to injure France's weapon of mass destruction hooker Julien Rinaldi out of the tournament. Oh yes and Australia thrashed New Zealand a staggering 36 points to 6.

Friday 7th November
Nothing at all to do with Keats, Wordsworth, Byron or the other fellow. Rather an incarnation of that well-known British work ethic... P*ss Off Early Tomorrow's Saturday.

Reason being (to miss-quote the other fellow) If winter's here... what do we do now? Well, with nothing much going on in town, some of us have decided to get together on a Friday for a couple of hours, to have a natter in our own language, catch up with friends, meet new people, put the world to rights and have a few drinks. In English!

It's not a club. Anyone is welcome. There are no rules... well, just one, we don't buy rounds, for therein lies ruin! Just grab you're own drink and join-in.

Café Voyageurs, Place de la République, St. Céré

We will use the same venue at the same time every week. We chose The Voyageurs, as it is in Place de la République, which just about anyone should be able to find. Anyway, Yves, Le Patron is a Bonhomme. Time? Well, for the first meet, we thought we would go for between 17h.00 and 19h.00.

See you there?

Out and About

Seen in town

Chapmans
Di and John Chapman in town for the St. Céré Autumn Fête, from their converted barn near Aynac. Tucking into hot roasted chestnuts and fresh squeezed apple juice, both seemed on top form and enjoying the glorious autumn sunshine.

New property owners - the Williams - with property finder Amanda Windsor

My house...
Something of a rare breed these days, Joanna and Richard Williams were in town to celebrate their signing the Acte de Vente on their new house in Beaulieu. Pictured with property finder, Amanda Windsor (right), who managed to come up with just the right property.
