Here we review the week ending Saturday 26th July, updating as
we go....

|
|
You could hardly move in Rue de la République, there was
not a table to be had in the restaurants of Place Mercadial and
Place de La République was a sea of people washing around
the many island stalls... Night Market in St. Céré.

The first thing that struck was how quiet the town was. Hardly a
soul around in Place de la République... only one or two
people in the Voyageur... no-one in Rue de la République.
Ghost town.

Around the corner into Place Mercadial and.... well, there was
a fair crowd there at the restaurants, enjoying a warm evening and
waiting for the Medieval "Happening" to happen... 'An
Evening at the Court of Henri IV'. Waiting being the operative word,
for after a brief medieval dance and a speech hampered by the sound
system, the stage was empty. And stayed empty. For a very long time.
The Swingin' Carpet at the music bar, Au Passé Simple round
the corner beckoned and, well... the costumes were great. See for
yourself by clicking on the image above and the images below, to

Another music night at the music bar, Au Passé Simple in
the Rue de la République. This time it was the turn of a
Jazz/Blues band called Swingin' Carpet. They were good. Very good
indeed. Playing a mixture of recognisable blues of the sort you
can hum, to some very skilled improvised Jazz. With just the right
mixture of sound from the drums, double base, tenor sax and guitar.

War Memorial, St. Céré, 14th July 2008 |
|
A simple ceremony took place in front of the War Mamorial on the
morning of Bastille Day, 14th July 2008. No band... no pomp... just
quiet respect for the oh so few veterans left standing and a memory
or two for those thay didn't make it. A wreath laying... a minutes
silence... a scratchy recording of La Marseillaise. It was... dignified.

On a lighter note, the afternoon of Sunday 13th saw a market in
Place de la République around the theme of Saffron. At 21
euros for 8 grams... now you know where the saying "... like
gold dust" comes from. You could grow your own, but you would
need some 170,000 flowers to harvest just one kilogram of dried
saffron, which in turn would need around a 2,000 square metre field.
They say tumeric is a poor mans substitute!
Anyway back to the market... various producers had stalls and there
was cake to eat, pies too... jams, cordials and a very acceptable
apéritif distilled by Lours Roque of Souillac. He says next
time you are in Souillac, call round for a tasting. For more information
he has a website
in English.

And on a much lighter note still... when firemen organise a party,
what is the first thing they do? Why, they set fire to things, that's
what they do. And they did it very well on the night of Saturday
12th July.
Except this time they did not put the fire out... it was needed
for cooking the Moules... many milles de moule, in fact. Whilst
not quite feeding the 5,000, there was more than enough Moules Frites
to go around and anyone who forked out the 20 euros for the privilige
of joining-in were certainly not dissappointed. Quality was superb,
quantities gargantuan and the company... happy to a person. Even
the guy on the drums smiled... eventually.

slide show of this very succesful evening.

The Bastille Day celebrations ended with great gusto, thanks to
the traditional firework display put on by the town hall.

Welcome back to Peter and Svetlana, who are back
home in St. Céré from a spell in Sedona,
Arizona, USA. We asked Peter what was the difference
between Winslow Arizona and Sedona Arizona (as in "Standing
on a corner in Winslow Arizona"). Remember? The
Eagles? still no? You are way too young for this website!
Anyway, quick as a flash came the reply... about a million
dollars an acre. Seems like Winslow Arizona never quite
made it, in spite of the song. Wonder if the Hotel California
is still there? What? Different song? Hey, man, same
trip!

Welcome back to Brits, Felix and Phil Rudge.
They are back in St Céré for the next
four or five months, whilst they sort out what they
are going to build on their great plot in St Vincent
du Pendit.
