It has happened. The little darlings have gone back to school.
Ahhh!
|
 |
| Tuesday 2nd September arrived at last and the lazy wake-up days
of the summer holidays came to an abrupt end, as alarm clocks throughout
France heralded their back-to-work/back-to-school reveille.
Throughout France, as, for the first time since 1990, all primary
school children went back to school on the same day. Again, for
the first time, all schools in France will abandon Saturday morning
school as the teaching week shrinks from 26 to 24hrs. There will
be no school on Wednesday, either.
Back to basics seems to be the new (Government fostered initiative)
as concern rises over the number of French schoolchildren failing
to master the 3R's, rises. Curriculum emphasis will be on reading,
writing and arithmetic skills and civics.

We understand civics to be loosly based upon what we would
call citizenship. Which is where La Marseillaise comes in.
All children at primary school will be taught the French National
Anthem.
So, to give your kids a fighting chance of keeping up with their
French peers, we publish here, not only a potted history of La Marseillaise,
the French words to this famous anthem, but an English translation
as well. As a bonus, you can also access that memorable scene from
Casablanca when "all the usual suspects" in Rics Bar,
outsing the Nazis, with La Marseillaise. Enjoy.

Forget crop cirles and lights in the night sky - aliens
can write and count. Well, almost - they do not know
their numbers too well. Appearing mysteriously pretty
much overnight, what do these strange markings mean?
Click the photo to find out one explanation.
Of course, you may know better...
