It was the End of Summer fête in St. Céré
this weekend and a good time seems to have been had by all.
|
|
Shrieks from the fairground, music in the market square and fireworks
in the night sky, heralded the start of the 2008 St. Céré
Fête and the begining of the end of Summer, as the clock ticked
inexorably toward the Autumn Equinox (see below).

Mind you, the Mairie caught us wrong footed this time. as the fireworks
were launched at ground zero from the Mairie gardens and not from
St. Laurent as normal.. As a resullt... no photo. Oh well, there
is always next year.

The Saturday afternoon was given over to kids and funfair rides,
churros and candy floss. At least, it was for the more canny of
the local children. For, as one savvy seven year old told us, "..
so it is better to come on Saturday and not Sunday, because you
get longer on the rides. The fairground people do not short time
you, as there are no queues for them to get through". Out of
the mouths of babes...

Sunday dawned bright, clear and warm and by 3 o'clock, the square
and Rue de République were packed, with the long queues for
the rides only shortening as the floats began their circumnavigation
of the town.
The colourful floats this year seemed to be about gambling, although
no official explanation seemed to be forthcoming for this less thas
child friendly theme. But, suffice to say, whatever the meaning,
the kids had a great time as they took centre stage and hammed it
up for the crowds.

day, as the bands drowned out the throb of the tractor diesles and
the town came to a temporary halt.

Click the photo for an explanation of Equinox
At least that is what the astonomers say, despite the obvious summery
weather we are enjoying... you only have to look out the window.
St Matthews Day, September 21, is meant to be a key date
for forecasting the coming months: Matthews Day, bright
and clear, brings good wine in next year.
Another old wives tale has it that a quiet week before the autumn
equinox and after, means the temperature will continue higher than
usual into the winter. In fact, the weather on September 20, 21,
and 22 is supposed to dictate the weather for the rest of autumn.
Given the great weather we had on those days, we could be in for
a gloriously warm autumn... we'll see.
Thing is though, do you know your Equinox from your Solstice? No?
Thought not. So, for those of you who must have been looking out
the window in double science that day, you can
Click here or the photo above to pop-up a definitive answer to this
oft asked question.
