The Saint Céré Music Festival got off to a good start
on Tuesday 14th July, with a free performance of Verdi's La Traviata.
The organisers cleverly use their "Programme Off" to provide
a full dress rehearsal/shake-down performance of their set-piece
Operas and major festival performances, prior to the festival "proper"
kicking-off. A great idea for us noveaux-poor Brtits, when you consider
the entry price this year goes as as high as 53€.
But it is not just Opera that the festival is offering us free
- far from it. For full details of the freebies on offer, click
this link or the image above.

For full details of the Festival Programme, which runs from 27th
July to 15th August, click the image above or go to the Festival's
official site, by clicking the following link: www.opera-eclate.com

Henry Allingham 1916
Brit, Henry Allingham, the worlds oldest man, who fought for
Britain in the first world war, has died peacefully in his sleep,
aged 113.
Henry was born in East London in 1896 and served with the Royal
Naval Air Service during the Great War, later transferring to the
Royal Air Force when it formed on 1st April 1918. He served at Ypres
and was the last survivor of the Battle of Jutland. He was awarded
France's highest honour, Legion d'Honneur, in 2003.
Mr Allinghams death means that Harry Patch, 111, the last
survivor of the First World War trenches, is now Britains
oldest man.
Nicknamed the The Last Tommy Patch is a veteran of
1917s battle of Passchendaele in which more than 70,000 British

A thoroughly good time was had by all who participated in the annual
Sapeurs Pompiers Moules Frites Brazoucade, Saturday 11th July, Place
de la République. One of the best "public-eat-ins"
of the year, held in St. Céré.
The next not-to-be-missed is the annual Marche des Producteurs et
Picnic Gourmand, where you simply grab a tray and roam the stalls
of local producers, buying what you like and then grabbing a seat
at one the the long tables to enjoy. Thursday 30th July, Place de
la République.

home.
Dino, one of the dogs we featured on the website last month, has
been adopted, but they have several others that need to find new

Just to let you know, that the Paper/Bookshop next
to the Café Maury, now has an English book section as well
as carrying UK newspapers. Peter May, the author whose books are
featured prominently in the shop, is, of course, a resident here.
When he is not in China, that is. China? If you are at all puzzled...
read his books!

Just got an e-mail asking just that. Oh what a joy...
a Curry restaurant right here in St. Céré, we thought.
Alas it is not to be... not yet, anyway, for the e-mail was from
French based (Normandy) Brit entrepeneur, Eric, who runs an internet
mail order company called appropriately enough, PacketCurry.com.
Eric says:
.. look, If you're undecided
take a risk and splash out on a couple of packets - if you don't
like them I'll send you a full refund and bunch of flowers.
Can't get fairer than that! Ed

We will be meeting on Friday 7th August at the Café Voyageurs,
as usual, to put the world to rights and for a drink or three.
If you are out and about...
join us.
Café Voyageurs, Place de la République, St. Céré
- venue for anyone who wants to speak English to other English speakers
- at least once a month!
Don't forget, if you can capture a French friend who is trying
to learn English, there can be no better way for them to practise,
than to join us.
See you there?

In this section we provide links to current local
and national news items, which may well affect you if you either
live near St. Céré or, as expats anywhere in
France.
The scroller above will halt as your mouse hovers
over it. Then just click on a brief news item link that is of interest,
and a fuller version will open in a new window.
If you have a local news item you would like to see
aired, please let us know. Use the e-mail form accessed by clicking
