Well, the 2nd Night Market of the summer passed off peacefully...
maybe a bit too peacefully for the stallholders, as those out and
about with money in their pockets spent a great deal of it in the
bars and restaurants of St. Céré, not really venturing
amongst the stalls in any great numbers until well after 10h.00.
Also, maybe a bit too peacefully for those Samba fans out
there as, yet again, the famous Samba band and dancers failed to
show. The blood rose at one stage as the beat of drums filled the
warm night air... but it was only the Senegalese drum band doing
a bit of a walk-through promo.
Anyway, please do not contact us for news of the Sambas... write
instead to the Mairie, demanding their reinstatement next year.
And, to remind Monsieur Le Maire what you mean, copy and send him
the picture below!

As the temperatures soared this week and the dreaded "....
I'm bored Dad" was heard, we grabbed the gear and went swimming.
This time we chose Crêperie Py near Loubressac to cool down.
Several other expats also chose this venue and the murmur of voices
included Dutch, American, Belgian English and, French of course.
If you haven't been, it is a bit like walking into a club, in as
much as there is no ticket booth, no entry fee... no barriers at
all. You just wander in. The owners put you on trust that you will
buy something from the bar/restaurant sometime during your visit,
but in all the times we have been there we have never seen anyone
being hassled to buy. On the contrary, the staff are as laid back
as their customers and it can be difficult sometimes to get an order
in... idly timing the (charming) waitress this week, it even took
25 minutes to get our bill!
Not that we were in a hurry. Crêperie Py is just not that
sort of place... the living's easy.
Mind you, we are pretty much spoilt for choice here in St. Céré,
so for you strangers in town, here is a quick round-up of other
places to take the plunge.

Between Carennac and Betaille, is one of the Water Parks that beckon
the hot and dusty. The usual mixture of sedate swings and seesaws
for the toddlers, through bouncy castles and trampolines for the
younger but more agile, through to water slides (one of which is
fairly daunting), not to mention, of course, a vast swimming pool.
Pools, because there is a separate one for toddlers. A good café
bar and lots of shady grass to camp out on completes the picture.
There is an entrance fee and they do not seem to mind you taking
an eskie with you.

Fancy an away day. To Padirac? OK, it is only 15 minutes from St.
Céré, but, a change is as good as a rest, they say
and you have to do something with those summer visitors! If you
head for the Gouffre Padirac before the crowds get there, you'll
get a hassle free tour of the underground wonders. When finished,
head for Insectopia, just across the road and find out everything
you did not know you had forgotten about Bugs! naturally, after
that, you'll be thinking about lunch, so head for one of the restaurants
and spoil yourself. By now, you will be feeling pretty exhausted,
if not a little full, so a laze by a turquoise blue lagoon could
just get your soul back in touch with your body. You are in luck....
Round the corner from the famous Gouffre, you will find tucked
away a bit of an oasis. Or should we say atoll... for this Parc
Aquatique is modelled on a tropical lagoon setting of white, white
"sand" and turquoise blue water.
The "sand" turns out to be a non-slip gypsum surface,
but the visual effect is superb and you do not get sand stuck in
your toes! The first of the connected pools is a gently sloping
incline, the better for toddlers to get into the deeper water and
the better for those of advancing years to get used to the 0h-so-refreshing-coolness
of the water. In otherwords, you have time to adjust before the
water hits anything sensitive!
Access to deep water is under the arched bridge. This in turn leads
to another bridge, into the deep pool that catches those intrepid
enough to brave the water slides. Add bouncy castles, climbing frames,
trampolines and a youngsters playground and the kids are pretty
much taken care of. The adults can fall back on the café, with its
ice cold draft beers and snacks. Mind you, nobody minds if you take
your own picnic and bottle laden chilly bin.

St Céré today loses two of its better known expats
... Danny and Liz.
Frustrated by the seemingly impenetrable French bureaucracy
that has, effectively, left them without the all essential Carte
Vitale and coupled with the the difficulty in finding regular work,
they have given up on the "French Dream" and are returning
to Scotland. Where the grass might not necessarily be greener, but
at least if you cannot find what you want in Tesco, then Asda will
certainly have it... or Sainsbury, or Morrisons, or Waitrose, or
...
Happy shopping Liz and Danny... hope to see you next
year for a bit of St Céré sunshine and summer nonsense.
Bon Voyage.

Georgina Whiffing has been in touch to tell us of
a new Bergerac based shopping/delivery service for expats. Shop
online, say at Tesco or B&Q and you can have stuff delivered
to Sterling
Shopping's UK address in Oxfordshire. They will then deilver
it to a pick-up point for you to collect, here in France. Thus,
you can shop the UK from your computer and pay for it in Sterling
(if you still have a UK functioning bank account!). No foreign exchange
to worry about. For full details, visit their website by clicking
the link below.

Happy shopping!

Paul and Jason at the Carennac bed and breakfast and
eatery, La Petite Vigne, have been in touch to say that they will
be closing for the season on September 5th. If you were planning
to go this summer, but haven't got around to it, then now is your
chance to grab a table reservation.
Fish and Chip Nights:
Friday 28th and Saturday 29th August. Telephone for reservations:

We will be meeting on Friday 4th September at the Café
Voyageurs, as usual, to put the world to rights and for a drink
or three.
If you are out and about...
join us.
Café Voyageurs, Place de la République, St. Céré
- venue for anyone who wants to speak English to other English speakers
- at least once a month!
Don't forget, if you can capture a French friend who is trying
to learn English, there can be no better way for them to practise,
than to join us.
See you there?
