With the north and north east of France in a frozen grip
that has caused havoc with aircraft movements in and out of Paris
Charles de Gaulle Airport... and with Marseilles under snow, we
in the Lot are suddenly and smugly bathed in glorious warm sunshine!
Mind you, we pay for it overnight as the clear skies allow the
temperature to plummet, nicely covering the cars in thick frost,
but, hey... at least it has stopped the pub pundits from moaning
- "... maybe we didn't come far enough South...". Long
may this sunshine last... you can always chuck another log into
the woodburner when the sun goes down!

Some reports have it that EDF are deliberately denying some
areas of electricity when demand peaks. So, were the recent power
cuts during the night accidental, caused by iced-up power lines,
aircraft strikes, bird strikes, lightning strikes or the hand of
man?
Consider this... for every degree drop in temperature below freezing,
demand for electricity goes up by a staggering 2,100MW two
times the amount of electricity used by the city of Marseille!
In consequence, EDF have warned that they may introduce rolling
blackouts to certain homes to avoid the breakdown of the national
grid.
The director of EDF, Pierre Gadonneix, said there was a risk of
a national blackout if the network was overloaded.
For the moment this is working but if it gets any colder
we cant rule out selective blackouts, that is to say, cutting
the power to certain clients for short periods to save the remainder,
he said. (er... have you paid your bill?... Ed)

Yep, it's time to dig out the thermals and ski gear, as the local
ski season is in full swing.
Local? We thought St. Céré was in the sunny Dordogne
River Valley, we hear your say. True, but placed as we are in the
east of the Lot, St. Céré is a mere 1 hour 20 minute
drive away from the ski-slopes.
You can choose from Mont D'Or or Super Lioran, both are
about the same distance. We chose Super Lioran, just north of Aurillac
on the Massif Central. It is a small, purpose built resort, with
bars, restaurants and apartments clustered in a crescent facing
"The Prairie" (as it is called) the slopes and ski lifts.
Being purpose built and French at that, of course, means being able
to ski right up to your table in the sun for lunch! If there is
enough snow. Which there usually is, as Super Lioran is well equipped
with snow cannon in case the temperature soars.
Don't take our word for it, jump in the car one of these sunny
mornings at a leisurely after breakfast hour and you'll be having
lunch on the slopes before you know it.

St. Céré Equitation, formerly known (to us, anyway)
as Siramon Riding School has upped sticks and moved to a great new
location on the other side of St. Céré. Just off the
main road to Gramat from St. Céré at Donat Haut, the
new facilities include a marvellous new training paddock, not to
mention the many "promenades" available in the glorious
surrounding countryside.
Clicking on the images above in turn, will
pop-up a larger version of that image
To celebrate the move, Claire and Celine threw open
the doors to all and sundry with the invitation to come, see, touch...
ride if you want to. Many took advantage of the very fine weather
to venture out and have a nose. The kids, especially, enjoyed the
opportunity of a free ride. We got there with an Espace load of
borrowed kids immediately after lunch and were well placed to beat
the queues.
Members of the Federation Francaise, d'Equitation
(FFE), St. Céré is a very well run riding school and
it would be hard to imagine better instructors than Claire and Celine,
who throw themselves with energy and enthusiasm, into the task of
converting pedestrians into chevaliers!
They are always pleased to see new faces so, whether
you are a beginner or a competent rider, go along and see them.
They don't bite... neither do the very well behaved horses!
St Céré have a website with a map of
their location and their contact details. Oh yes, in case you are
shy of using your French, Claire speaks English.
