Positioned as it is in the Dordogne Valley, just East of the
sweeping curve the river takes on its way from Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne,
St. Céré grew because it was a strategically important
site.
From Julius Caesar, who stationed his legions here, through the
hundred yerars war, civil war, the wars of religion... the town
and the surrounding villages bear witness to mans attempts to defend
what he has got... to try and take what he has not.
Our legacy is a country-side rich in historic castles and fortified
villages, several of which are officially designated as being the
most beautiful in France - Les Plus Beaux Villages de France.
We have put together information with photographs of some of these
marvellous places, to give you a flavour of the richness that awaits
you should you venture here.
